Symbol of minimalism and sophistication, the Celine brand was founded in 1945 by Céline and Richard Vapiana as a made-to-measure children’s shoe store in Paris. In 1960, they successfully launched their first ready-to-wear line for women, combining everyday functionality and style in a sportswear-driven approach. 

When Céline Vapiana dies aged 84, Michael Kors takes over the artistic direction from 1997 to 2007, and brings a new focus on jet set collections with skimming dresses, swimwear and colorful tailoring. He imagines the two “It” bag styles: Boogie and Poulbot.

After some disappointing years, Phoebe Philo takes the helm in 2008 and brings back the brand to fashion’s forefront, with her clean lines and modern minimalist vision of Vapiana’s original aesthetic. In 2018, after a very successful decade at Celine, Phoebe Philo steps down and is replaced by Hedi Slimane.
